5. How do I prepare the surface?
- Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or old finishes.
- Avoid cleaning with white spirit.
- For best results, lightly sand the surface and always test on a small area first.
- Do not apply to wet wood.
6. How do I apply GRAIN GUARD Wood Stain Aerosols?
Step 1 – Shake:
Shake the can thoroughly before use to mix the water-based stain.
Step 2 – Apply:
Hold the aerosol 15–30 cm from the surface and apply in light, even coats along the wood grain. Wipe away any drips or excess with a clean, dry cloth.
Step 3 – Repeat if Needed:
- Light Oak & Medium Oak: 1 coat usually sufficient.
- Dark Walnut: 1–2 coats for optimum shade.
- English Oak & Black Ebony: 2–3 coats for best results.
Step 4 – Dry:
Allow at least 2 hours for the surface to dry before applying any topcoat or polish.

Approximately 3 m² per coat, depending on wood type and absorbency.
8. How should I store the aerosol?
- Store in a cool, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.

How to Use
How to Use
1. Preparation
Ensure the area is well ventilated and avoid breathing vapour / spray. Ensure the area to be treated is free from dirt, grease, debris and previous finishes. Do not apply to wood that is wet & avoid cleaning the surface with white spirit. For the best finish, a clean, well sanded surface will always yield the best results. ALWAYS first test on small area to assess compatibility and finish.
2. Application
Shake can well before use. Apply in light thin coats until desired colour is achieved. When applying use smooth stokes, 15-30cm away from surface. Drips or excess spray can be evened out using a clean dry cloth.
3. Repeat
Grain Guard’s Wood Stain typically needs just 1 coat to achieve the optimum shade on pine or light hardwoods. However, several coats can be applied in order to reach the desired colour.
- Light Oak & Medium Oak dye generally needs just 1 liberal coat to achieve the optimum shade on pine or light hardwoods.
- Dark Walnut dye generally needs 1-2 coats to achieve the optimum shade on pine or light hardwoods.
- English Oak & Black Ebony dye generally needs 2-3 coats to achieve the optimum shade on pine or light hardwoods.
4. Allow to dry
Allow the product to dry for at least 2 hours to fully dry before applying any topcoat / polishes.
5. Storage & Reuse
To prevent blockages, invert the can after use and spray for 2 seconds. This aerosol should be stored out of direct sunlight, in a cool well ventilated place.
